Early Instruments and Parts

The barograph was used to trace their flight. They used smoked foil around the drum to record their flight.
The rate of climb instruments displayed here were used in the early days of flying. They were only used on the first few flights of the club.  These instruments were not calibrated.
Toilet Paper – Tony often took up a roll of toilet paper to use as a ‘rate of climb’. He would release a stream of individual sheets or bits of sheets overboard. If the sheets or bits went up, the balloon was going down. If it went down they were going up and if they traveled at the same level of the balloon they were flying level. This method was also not calibrated.
