Alps – Fourth Flight – 1972

From Stechelberg, Switzerland to Meringen, Switzerland

Pilot Tony Fairbanks, Passengers Robert Diforio, Simone King, Claire Moorehead, George O’Meara

Flew the ‘Basel’ 80,000 cu. ft. balloon and landed after two hours.

Note:  This was Tony’s shortest flight. The radio the balloons are required to carry ordered all three balloons flying that day to land immediately due to an electrical storm. Tony made a successful landing in a Swiss valley but as he began to pull the rip panel, which releases all the gas, the envelope burst into flames and was completely destroyed.

Description of one flight

This was written in German by Emil Imhof, who was  a passenger on one of the flights.

This was translated by C.F. Moorhead, a passenger in Tony’s balloon.
